BIO

 

Philip Zwiegers, born 1976 in Lichtenburg, South Africa. His upbringing in rural South Africa and the transition to urban life informed his practice and spent 10 years in London (UK) discovering and refining it.



He lives and works under the Hiddensee Foundation in Gqeberha (previously Port Elizabeth, RSA).





STATEMENT



Philip Zwiegers’ practice revolves around the fusion of wood and metal. His work explores the complimentary possibilities and modification of naturally dried hardwood with low melting point alloys.



The objects represent a convergence between man and nature, challenging and redefining the balance between these forces. In his practice, Zwiegers always maintains part of the original state of the wood, thereby allowing nature and man to contribute to each piece.
